Old Man Blues - (For Jacques)
Life gives, but sadly it also takes away. Two weeks ago, my older brother Jacques passed away unexpectedly. He was laid to rest yesterday afternoon. When I wrote this song long ago, I could not imagine that I would one day sing it as a tribute to him. Our hearts are broken, but he is at peace now.

Happy New Year everyone! :-) First video of 2023, and it's a rendition of a song dear to me, composed by the late great Francis Bebey. Idiba means "morning" in Duala (or Douala), Bebey's native language from the Littoral region of Cameroon. One of the artists that greatly influenced my guitar playing growing up in Cameroon. Bossa Nova pioneer João Gilberto left us on July 6, 2019. In Brazil, one of his nicknames is "O Mito" which can be translated as "The Legend." The world lost one of the last guitar whisperers, but he left us with such an incredible musical legacy. I have always loved his version of this song, and this is my humble tribute to the master. Iconic song by one of my favorite Blues artists, Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James. This is a shortened version, inspired by a 1967 performance by James, just two years before his passing. This song had been bouncing in my brain for the past two weeks, which is quite appropriate since O Sapo means The Frog :-) I play it here in the inimitable style of João Gilberto, without actual lyrics. Although Donato is the composer, Brazilian great Caetano Veloso wrote lyrics for the song and that version is often called "A Rã" (both titles mean The Frog) Hope you like it! :-)

You're still the master JR! Sadly this is still a song with a theme as relevant as ever. Unscrupulous corporations harming the environment for the sake of profits, while scummy CEOs do their best not to take responsibility. But music like this makes it all a little more bearable. I'm wondering why this song didn't make the cut when you were doing the A Time To Be Blue album. It would have been a great fit. Maybe there was not enough studio time to do it as well? I hope you will consider putting it on a future record if you ever make another. Soon I will buy your album, when my economy is less tight. It will be a tribute to João Gilberto. Probably out sometime next year, I am taking my time. I grew up in Mississippi and never once listened to the blues and then when I moved I heard Stevie ray Vaughan…after that I started listening to bb king muddy waters.
